Newport

Description
Newport is one of few spaceport cities on the desolate Alzoc III, making it a prime target for the Empire\'s invasion of the mineral-rich planet. Rebel planetary energy shields have made traditional orbital bombardment tactics ineffective. The planet\'s sudden blizzards have made starfighter close-air support almost impossible to coordinate. Faced with no other option for crushing their opponent, the Empire committed ground troops for a conventional assault. Imperial and Alliance forces have fiercely contested the city for two straight days, in that time wreaking massive damage on the town and its infrastructure with brutal short-range turbolaser artillery bombardment and proton-torpedo strikes. After failing to breach the Rebel defenses, the Empire has now established a forward prefabricated garrison base to facilitate the final assault against the Rebellion\'s last line of defense.
