After first contact with the Dominion and the destruction of the starship U.S.S. Odyssey, Starfleet Command looked to bolstering the combat capabilities of federation starships in light of this new threat from the Gamma Quadrant. One of the avenues of investigation was the refitting of all current Galaxy Class vessels in active service. Starfleet Analysts found that the U.S.S. Odyssey wasn't very maneuverable in combat compared with the Dominion Attack Ships and lacked sufficient power to the shields to sufficiently protect the ship from the polaron based weapons of the J'em Hadar. Also an investigation also found that the original galaxy design had insufficient phaser coverage from strafing attack runs often used by smaller vessels.
The first newly refitted ship out of spacedock was the U.S.S. Venture NCC-71854. Numorous upgrades had been implemented aboard the Venture to give the vessel greater firepower and lastabiliy in combat situations. The most notable enhancement were made to the Shields, Impulse Engines and Sensors. The Venture also had two nacelle mounted phaser arrays to help protect from from strafing attacks, also Quantum Torpedoes were added to the ships inventory to give the vessel a lot more firepower in battle.

Refitted galaxy class vessels later served with distinction during the Dominion War, their strength and durability proved crucial in numorous battles, but most notably in the Battle of Deep Space 9 and in the Battle of Chin'toka. Starfleet Command has ordered that this refit become standard on all galaxy class starships by 2382.
