Description Nothing in this mod is forced and if you want, you won't even notice that something has changed, unless you often look at your statistics menu or read in-game books just for fun.
You've got a skill called Trickery, which you can see in your statistics menu. Depending on this skill the grand book of Illusions may grant you speels, powers, lesser powers and items.
1. Progress
To progress in Trickery you MUST roleplay thief and illusion assassin. Or just one of these.
1. Find Rare Coins in :
1) Clutter boxes ( low chance )
2) NPCs' pocket ( low chance )
3) Some animals ( low chance )
4) Markless quests ( guaranteed if you follow the instructions )
5) Secret Stashes ( enabled if your trickery is high )
6) Very rarely in dungeon loot
each grants 3 points initially , but the exp gain can be increased and this is where you are forced to roleplay as a thief. It is a mood for illusionits afterall.
2. Mark enemies for trickery ( with new spells ), with a chance to place a cursed coin in their inventory. Each grants 5 pts,
but this number can be increased
3. Do quests. Many quests grant experience in Trickery, but not all of them. Look for quests that require some thinking. Therefore the majority of TG quests and many DB quests grant 50 each. Some quests grant more, but these are very rare. It would be hard to progress without it. Talking to the night mother grants experience too.
4. Read some books. These are rare, so this one cannot be cheesed. You will be granted a choice to read it or not once you activate a book.
Note on markless quests :
1) You find Orders Of Execution in desks
2) An order specifies a target, its location, where to put certain items and where to get your reward.
3) Most targets are in public places, and you will need to use illusion to kill them without this crime being traced back to you.
4) Each quest grants 5 coins.
5) There are no markers or quest entries.
2. What you get
Reading a book with enough experience unlocks new levels of trickery granting you spells and items. Most of them are easy to understand, but :
Mind control spells affect targets up to level 100, meaning that they affect anybody in this game. The game's limit of 25 was hillarious so that playing past lvl 25 was senseless. Now it is not.
Spell & effects that might be confusing :
Mark for trickery - chance to place a cursed coin in target's pockets. Usually comes with a mind control effect.
Summon Storage - open a chest ( activate an invisible chest ) for 1 cursed coin
Shadow cloak - makes player invisible every 3 seconds while sneaking. Each invisibility casts lasts 60 seconds
Activate coin of death - place a coid of death into enemy's inventory and cast this spell on it without being noticed to make it lose hp for 300 seconds and eventually die. May be very usefull when you need to kill someone in public
Evil Twin - creates a copy of the target and they start fighting each other. The copy is often passive thus acting as a distraction, but there are ways to make it quite deadly.
Strip Magic Protection - removes 50 points of spell absorption and reflect spell temporarily
xx Veil - equip xx faction member faction and become one of them. For Example, casting bandit veil makes bandits friendly to you and equips full fur set on you
Curse of fire - makes target explode every 4 seconds.
Darkness - 100% chameleon , but you can see yourself. Also you receive some shadow around you. Don't be scared if you see yourself in the inventory menu - it's not permanent.
Quick mark & recall - mark is free, recall costs some coins. Simply mark and recall are powers and cost nothing.
Plant fire bomb - place a curse on the target, so that whenever it's hit with a fire spell with DURATION, it explodes. The range is big and it's deadly to everyone around the victim. You must not be noticed while casting or it won't work. Also it agitates the target immediately.
Rage/Calm cloak - cast rage/calm at certain intervals with a chance, which can be increased. The range is 10 feet, affects everyone. Also puts coins in inventories if you are lucky.
Cloak of fear - doesn't demoralize enemies since they can be demoralized only by a character, not an invisible item. It lowers their confidence, so they don't run away immediately.
Calm Shield - calms everyone around the player in 10 feet if the player receives any damage. Careful with time based damage spells. You must lose at least 5 hp in a second.
Share the pain - the target receives the damage that you receive.
Eye for Treasure - collects rare coins from containers
Space Jump - mark your position and return there in 10 seconds. If you are in combat and sneaking , the combat is over once you return
Space Leap - paid space jump for 60 seconds. May allow to loot a dungeon and teleport back
Spellfire - damages the target every time it casts a spell
Swap- swaps caster's and target's positions
Telekinesis / Magnet cloak - pushes/pulls targets around the casters at some intervals based on 50% chance
Mark for Target - mark your position for a spell Teleport Target which teleports a target to a marked position wherever it is for coins.
Drop target - only outdoors, teleports the victim 3000 feet above you. Very expensive in terms of mod's economy
Touch of treachery - throws the target if it's calmed (initially paid)
Consuming Anger - -50 to magicka/physical defense to a target under frenzy (initially paid)
Paralyzing Fear - paralyze a demoralized enemy by damaing its faitigue ( resistance to paralysis won't work) (initially paid)
Suicide - cast on a target that is not in combat with a low chance to make it kill itself and grant you 10 points of Trickery experience
Resist Silence - does what its name suggests. Not compatible with Av Latta
Calming Protection, Telekinetic Protection, Master Of Mirror Reality - added by items that are clothing shields. When blocking, places corresponding effects on targets around you. The last one casts Evil Twin on all around you. Every cast happens every 3 seconds which is usually not immediate once you start blocking.
Forgetful World - reduce your bounty by 200 for 5 cursed coins. Won't work with the cowl of nocturnal.
Keen eye - a power that reveals NPCs carrying rare coins. Also available as a lesser power
Obtain Stone of Power - buy a random new sigil stone ( 3 effects for armor and weapon ) for 100 rare coins. You're going to spend a lot of time gathering them.
Phase Shift - become immune to combat damage for 100 magicka as a lesser power. Traps and gravity can still kill you.
Recharge Hourglass - recharges an hourglass weapon for 1 cursed coin. It has 2 charges and paralyzes enemies in place like the staff of sheogorath but, they can be damaged.
Poison spells - do what their names suggest and all available for spellmaking
Dark Soul - once your health hits 20% or lower, heals you for half of the hp you had when you got the effect and throws away nearby characters. Everytime this happens you are healed 50% less until 10, so that it has charges depending on your max hp when you got the effect. For example, you have 100 hp. When your hp hits 20 or lower, it heals you 50 hp, next time your hp hits 20 or lower it heals you 25 hp and so on until it's 10. At 10 it doesn't work, so you must heal yourself and get the effect again.
Summon Trickster - ultimate spell, illusion based, summons a very powerful trickster who can kill anything.
3. Masks
The mod introduces masks that take a tail or head slot. They are enchanted and grant special perks when worn. Consider switching them in combat once you discover what it does. Placed in jewellery boxes they are located in different places. Note, that 2 of these are in places only accessible in quest locations for the Heist and in Arkved's Bedroom for Vaermina quest. With high trickery you can get most of their perks without wearing them, with an exception of the masks that change spells completely or some unique mask effects. You need to collect all the 12 masks for this. Unlock the Secret of the Masks is a lesser power that grants an ability to use most perks regardless of a mask and tells you how many masks are there yet to collect.
I'm not going to write here all of their locations. Consider it a quest
4. New items :
Trickster's hourglass - see Recharge Hourglass. It's a weapon
Ancient scroll - scorll as a weapon
Control Rod - one handed staff that commands anyone
Scroll of Space - clothing shield, when blocking casts telekinetic blast in 10 feet every 3 seconds
Staff of Strife - also clothing shield, when blocking casts evil twin in 10 feet every 3 seconds
Book of Zod - like Staff of Strife, but calms enemies every 3 seconds when blocking.
Most of these require very high level of trickery. Shields sometimes don't appear on the player if you unequip them - reequip them several times until they can cast spells. Likey that you won't need to reequip them often.
The mod changes DB reward weapon enchantments and makes the Blade Of Woe useful with new effects instead of demoralize for 0 seconds and FORTIFY magicka.
5. Arrow crafting
You can craft arrows with gold, iron arrows and ingredients
Most of them do what they are supposed to, but :
Jump arrow teleports the target back in 5 seconds
Throwback - pushes everybody away in 10 ft
Illusion - casts a random illusion effect , including calm, demoralize, frenzy, silence and paralysis.
Crafting them grants Trickery experience (1pts, can't be increased)
6. Ways to increase your experience gain :
1) Pumpkin Mask : +1 for Rare Coins
2) Gray Cowl of Nocturnal : +3 for rare coins
3) Mask of Disgust : +1 for Cursed Coins
4) Seal of Sithis : +4 for Cursed Coins , get it as a DB listener
7. To start : the grand book of illusions is located where the Gray Fox originally is, in his room on the desk. Use wiki if you still don't know.
